Some companies are taking steps to identify what employees are interested in. For example, Hospira, a drug and medical device maker, conducted a survey by an internal group called the Hospira Women’s Network. The survey found that women:

  • sought opportunities for charitable work
  • leadership development
  • mentoring relationships
  • networking

This signifies that women want to have their ideas heard, similar to all employees, according to Kathy McDonagh, Hospira’s vice president for executive relations, who also heads a steering committee for the network.

The results of the employee survey spurred the company to create the “ignite program,” which enables staff to submit grant applications for ideas that enhance employee effectiveness. McDonagh submitted a grant application to expand the Hospira Women’s Network globally, and the group was awarded $5,000. The funds were used to launch meetings in international offices, including a video presentation featuring Hospira board member Connie Curran discussing the company’s commitment to women in leadership and the formation of resource libraries geared toward women. McDonagh says the grant funds represent an investment because “the stronger your women leaders are, the more they can drive growth of the organization and their own career development.”
